The idea to make a series about wizards began in the spring of 2010, when Alex Salem and Pierce O’Toole were hanging out in Boston, Massachusetts the week before they both graduated from Emerson College. Alex had the idea that he wanted to make something involving wizards that were slackers. Pierce loved the idea and jumped onboard to help write it. Pierce liked to think of it this way: if Harry Potter is the story of wizards at Hogwarts, then this series would be the story of wizards that went to community college.
However, over the next year of writing together, Alex and Pierce found that the story had become something much richer than they had originally thought of with their gimmicky set-up. It had become a coming of age story for two characters that happened to be wizards. These characters were defined by their own traits and personalities rather than the label of Wizard. Once they discovered this, they honed in on it with new drafts of new scripts in caffeine fueled writing sessions in Pierce’s kitchen that lasted until 1 or 2 AM.
In April of 2011 they had completed writing the first season of the web series that would come to be called The Idle Quest. Then began the real work: assembling the group of people to bring the story to life. That is the journey they are currently on.
